USGA unveils 'Caddyshack'-inspired slow-play PSA

RSS

ARDMORE, Pa. – The USGA’s inspiration for a new pace-of-play campaign is linked to a pair of famous fictional characters in golf: Al Czervik and Judge Smails.

“While we’re young,” is theme of the USGA’s public education campaign to address slow play.

That’s a line Rodney Dangerfield (Czervik) uses to shame Ted Knight (Smails) into speeding up play in the movie “Caddyshack.”

The USGA has enlisted the help of some big names in and outside of the game in a series of public service announcements to air beginning at this week’s U.S. Open. Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Clint Eastwood, Annika Sorenstam, Paula Creamer and Butch Harmon star in a series of five light-hearted PSAs.

“Pace of play has become a strategic priority for the USGA, and part of a larger leadership agenda to address the issues that threaten the long-term health of the game,” USGA president Glen D. Nager said. “Our new campaign underscores a commitment to educate golfers and golf facility managers in a fun and engaging manner about all the factors that contribute to pace of play and the role they can have in implementing practical solutions to the problem.”

The campaign steers viewers to the USGA microsite www.usga.org/whilewereyoung, where the organization is enlisting every day players as pace-of-play ambassadors.
