Vegas relishing Venezuelan food camaraderie

DORAL, Fla. – Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas feels like he’s playing at a new home away from home at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

A huge Venezuelan contingent in Miami has turned out this week to follow him, and he’s found some Venezuelan restaurants to dine on his favorite dishes.

Vegas learned just how tight knit the Miami Venezuelan community is on the eve of the tournament. Dining at a Venezuelan restaurant a few blocks from the golf course, he was so excited to find the tropical dish Cachapa on the menu, he snapped a cell phone photo of the dish after it was served and posted it on Twitter. A short time later, a Venezuelan family popped into the restaurant to meet him. They saw his Twitter post and recognized the restaurant as being near them.

“It was a mom and dad and a couple of kids,” said Vegas, who started the third round at 1-under 143. “I signed some hats for them.”

Vegas was impressed by the huge gallery that greeted him on the first tee in the opening round.

“Phenomenal,” Vegas said.
