KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Kevin Na (shoulder) and Scott Verplank (hip) each withdrew from the 94th PGA Championship on Friday.
Both players shot 75 in the opening round.
Na birdied his first two holes Friday on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, made the turn in even-par 36, and then played his next four holes in 6 over par before withdrawing. It was his second WD of the season; in April, he pulled out of the Valero Texas Open because of a back injury.
Meanwhile, the 48-year-old Verplank shot a 3-over 75 Thursday and was headed for something worse in the second round. Starting on the 10th hole, Verplank recorded two bogeys and two double bogeys to turn in 42.
Verplank, who has won five times on the PGA Tour, recorded his best career finish in a major at last year’s PGA, a tie for fourth at Atlanta Athletic Club. This season, he has made only two of seven cuts, and his best finish was a T-54 at the Masters.
