Before the very serious business of the European Tour’s grand finale, there was this on Monday: Five players stepping out onto the 22nd-floor balcony of the Royal Bridge Suite at the Atlantis hotel in Dubai and hitting mid-iron shots to a small green floating in the sea down below.
Yes, Lee Westwood won the closest-to-the-pin competition at the Atlantis Challenge, as his 7-iron shot from 225 yards finished just 4 feet away. Westy’s victory was confirmed by the guest referee, a shirtless Ian Poulter, who was presumably sunbathing nearby.
Said Henrik Stenson, “The shot itself was quite intimidating, especially getting straight out of bed onto my balcony to try to hit a 6- or 7-iron to a tiny target.”
