Nothing underscored the laid-back nature of the Presidents Cup quite like the first-tee festivities Thursday at Muirfield Village.
The Ohio State marching band made an appearance. Former president George W. Bush was on hand.
And then International team captain Nick Price, after a speech about how crucial it was for the visitors to get off to a hot start in opening fourballs, asked U.S. skipper Fred Couples if today was special for another reason, and indeed it was. Thursday was Couples’ 54th birthday, and for the occasion Price brought out a platter of cupcakes. (Insert Prez Cup joke here.)
The crowd soon serenaded Couples by singing “Happy Birthday.”
