The Viking Classic has bounced around as part of the schedule on the PGA Tour. This year, it was opposite the Open Championship. Chris Kirk won the event to become another rookie to win on the PGA Tour in 2011. Kirk, though, may not have a chance to defend his title.
Title sponsor Viking Range Company has ended its sponsorship of the tournament at Annandale Country Club in Madison, Miss., according to the Clarion Ledger.
Tournament director Randy Watkins said the event has until late September to produce a title sponsor or a group of lesser sponsors to keep the tournament afloat. Viking opted not to renew after discussions last week after five years as title sponsor. The event was washed out in 2009.
The loss of the Viking Classic would bring one of the existing four Fall Series events into the FedEx Cup portion of the schedule.
