DUBLIN, Ohio – Journalistic first on Thursday at Memorial. Just past noon, right about the time Muirfield Village began drying after the morning’s deluge, Jack Nicklaus held a wine tasting for his new line.
Among the options were a cabernet sauvignon and a private reserve – a smooth blend of cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot, malbec and petit verdot. Nicklaus said he was a wine connoisseur before it started giving him headaches.
“When I was 30 years old my wife called me a wine snob,” joked Nicklaus, who said he was able to start drinking wine again about 10 years ago.
As for the timing of Nicklaus’ tasting, midway through the opening round, the Memorial is known for its weather delays.
