SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – The USGA cited the two mid-amateurs’ proficiency in the foursomes format as one of the reasons for their mandatory inclusion in the 44th Walker Cup.
That theory will be put to the test Saturday, as both Nathan Smith and Todd White will play in the morning foursomes at National Golf Links. They will both sit in the afternoon singles matches.
Smith, a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, is playing in his third Walker Cup (2-3-1 record), while White, a 45-year-old history teacher in South Carolina, is making his debut.
Meanwhile, Max Homa, the 2013 NCAA champion, and former Cal teammate Michael Kim, who was the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world earlier this season, will sit in the opening session.
U.S. captain Jim Holtgrieve and GB&I captain Nigel Edwards needed to submit their lineups by 1 p.m. local time Friday. Their final-day lineups for Sunday foursomes and singles will be due an hour after play is completed Saturday.
