Watney shares Wells Fargo lead after 67

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Nick Watney has been trending in the right direction lately, but this may finally be the week for a serious title contention.

The five-time PGA Tour champion has finished T-15, T-13 and T-27 in his last three starts and now owns a share of the Wells Fargo Championship opening-round lead thanks to a 5-under 67.

“I think it's really going in the right direction,” he said about the state of his game. “I feel like today is one of the best rounds I've played all year – really clean, really steady. So I'm really looking forward to this week upcoming and the rest of the season.”

Watney carded five birdies in the first round against no bogeys, his seventh under-par score in his last eight competitive rounds.

“I played very nice,” he continued. “I was pretty steady. Didn't get in any real trouble, and I was able to get it going on my back nine, so I'm very pleased with today.”
