Watson 09 vs Nicklaus 86

TURNBERRY, Scotland – One of those interesting, and utterly useless, lunch-room conversations occurred as Tom Watson began his second round at Turnberry.

With apologies for the premature speculation, the question was posed: which would be a bigger victory – Jack Nicklaus winning the 1986 Masters or Tom Watson defying father time and winning the Open Championship?

With the exception of a misguided few, Watson’s potential triumph – at 59 years old and on the same links where he dueled with Nicklaus at the 1977 Open Championship – received the nod for most historic.

Now, back to reality.
