Watsons son wins prize in Amen Corner

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Tom Watson’s son is having a great week so far.

Before helping his father chase the jewel that is the Masters Trophy in Thursday’s hot start, Michael Watson gave his girlfriend a diamond ring.

Michael proposed to his fiancée, Beth Lindquist, at the famed 13th hole at Augusta National while playing with his father on Sunday. He called her out onto the course to propose. Augusta National Chairman Billy Payne was witness to the event.

“His bride to be didn't know anything about it,” Tom said. “Everybody was in on the scam, including Mr. Payne, from the top down, everybody knew. Got some great pictures of it, so we had a nice celebratory dinner at La Maison downtown.”

About the only element of the plan that didn’t go well was Michael’s tee shot at the 13th. He hooked it into the trees.

“I choked,” Michael said.

Michael had a good reason for proposing at the 13th.

“It’s a special hole,” he said. “I love it.”
