Webb relishes honoring LPGA founders

PHOENIX – Louise Suggs is an LPGA treasure.

That’s the respect Karrie Webb has for the Hall of Famer, one of the 13 founding members of the LPGA.

Just five of the founders are still alive and three of them are attending the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup this week. Webb likes the fact that players today who’ve never met Suggs or Shirley Spork or Marilynn Smith will get that chance at Wildfire Golf Club at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.

Webb’s become friends with Suggs, 87, who’s famous for her no-nonsense nature and biting humor.

Webb said when she won the LPGA Titleholders as a rookie, Suggs congratulated her and then quickly informed Webb that she had just won more money than Suggs won in an entire career that included 55 LPGA titles.

When Webb won the HSBC Champions two weeks ago for her 37th LPGA title, she got a voice mail from Suggs.

“She was like, `Great going, it was great to watch, you played great and you are almost catching up to me in wins. You might catch me one day,”’ Webb said.

Webb said she’s saved voice messages from Suggs because they’re so valuable to her.
