Weir excels at the toughest third shot in golf

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Mike Weir made one of the few birdies today at Pebble Beach’s 14th hole, a difficult 580-yard par 5.

Weir hit a wedge to 20 feet at the top of the small plateau where the pin sits front left.

The target area isn’t much bigger than a pair of pool tables with a bunker guarding the front of the green and steep slopes running off left and right.

“It’s the toughest third shot to a par 5 in golf,” Weir said.

Weir and K.J. Choi played together, shooting 1-under 70s to get in early contention. Choi also birdied the 14th. The two chatted often throughout their round. They both turned 40 in May.
