Weir withdraws from Houston, hopeful for Masters

Mike Weir will miss this week’s Shell Houston Open due to a rib injury, but anticipates being able to compete in the season’s first major championship.

The 2003 Masters champion withdrew during the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

“I initially felt the pain while I was working on the range after my round on Thursday. I was able to play through it on Friday and tried to keep playing on Saturday but the pain was just too much so I regretfully withdrew,” Weir wrote on his website Monday.

“Today, I went to see my doctor who told me that he suspects I have some torn cartilage in my ribs. He's put me on some anti-inflammatory pills and told me to rest for a while.”

Weir made the cut at Bay Hill, just the third cut he had made in nine starts on Tour in 2013. This year marks the 10th anniversary of his playoff victory at Augusta National.

“Right now, it's just going to be a day-to-day thing,' Weir wrote. 'I'll be heading back to the doctor at the end of the week to get an update.'
