Westwood ahead of schedule

NORTON, Mass. – Lee Westwood, expected to be the veteran leader of the European side at next month’s Ryder Cup , has not returned to golf since going on the disabled list with a calf injury last month but he will soon his manager said on Thursday at TPC Boston.

According to Chubby Chandler, Westwood’s manager with International Sports Management, the Englishman’s rehabilitation is about a week ahead of schedule and he will start hitting golf balls next week.

“He’s been working out every day,” Chandler said. “He will be fitter when he gets back.”

Chandler said Westwood plans to work himself back into tournament shape in time for the matches in October and will attempt to play 36 holes on Sept. 24, the Friday before the matches begin in Wales, to insure he can perform.
