CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a run that was reminiscent of Rory McIlroys closing flurry at Quail Hollow in 2010, Lee Westwood roared out with a front-nine 30 but couldnt maintain that pace on the back nine and finished with a 66.
Following birdies at Nos. 4 and 5, the Englishman eagled the par-5 seventh hole and moved into contention with two more birdies at Nos. 7 and 10. A poor chip at the 12th led to Westwoods only bogey of the day, and he parred in to post the low score of the day and finish at 11 under, three off the lead, as the frontrunners made the turn.
I had a great front nine, and that put me in a chance to win the tournament, said Westwood, who was tied for sixth when he finished and was 10 under on the weekend. Think if Id made two or three more birdies and finished at 14 under, Id have a sniff (at the title).
