WGCs Iron Man keeps on going

RSS

Stuart Appleby should be awarded some kind of medal or attendance pin when he tees it up at 12:48 p.m. Thursday to start the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational.

He’s the only player to compete in every WGC event staged as part of the PGA Tour schedule.

The only downside in that fact is that he’s 0 for 31 in trying to win the Accenture Match Play, CA Championship and Bridgestone Invitational.

Don’t feel sorry for him, though. He has earned $3,088,490 in those WGC events. That’s almost double what Arnold Palmer made in official earnings ($1,861,857) in his entire PGA Tour career. The closest Appleby's ever come to winning a WGC event came last year at the Bridgestone, when he birdied the 16th and 17th holes in the final round and then missed a 20-foot birdie putt at the final hole that would have forced a playoff with Vijay Singh. Appleby also was runner-up at the '03 CA Championship.
