KAPALUA, Hawaii – The name Bo Van Pelt sounds like an athlete, doesn’t it? Certainly not a florist or hair stylist. Bo’s Dad, Bob, was a center and long snapper for Indiana University in the 1960s.
“I’ve seen the old tapes,” Bo said. “And he could play.”
He battled legends like Bubba Smith and Dick Butkus in the Big Ten, and was later drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent a few years in the NFL before embarking on a career in the restaurant business.
“He used to joke that at least his kids wouldn’t go hungry,” Bo quipped.
The best piece of advice Bo’s father gave him, one pro athlete to another: “Play like you’re broke and hungry and you’ll never be either one.”
