Wi one shot ahead of Villegas, Gainey at Disney

Clinging to the 150th spot on the money list, Camilo Villegas didn’t want to take any chances so he signed up early for Q-School’s second stage, lest he fell outside the top 150 after this week.

One round into the PGA Tour’s season finale, however, he appears determined not to show up there.

Villegas shot a 7-under 65 Thursday to sit one shot back of leader Charlie Wi at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic. Wi birdied the last two holes to shoot 64, the best round of the day on the Palm Golf Course despite two bogeys.

Tommy Gainey, who won his first Tour event three weeks ago at The McGladrey Classic, also shot 65. Rookie Brian Harman, Scott Stallings, Matt Bettencourt and Russell Knox are another shot behind.

Villegas, a three-time PGA Tour winner, has fallen on hard times this season, earning only $460,474. The 30-year-old Colombian has failed to record a top 10, although he’s finished inside the top 30 in each of his past three starts, showing signs of life as the season draws to a close.

If Villegas finishes inside the top 126-150, he will automatically be exempt into Q-School finals. If he finishes inside the top 125, of course, he is awarded fully exempt status for 2013.
