FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Of all things, USGA setup czar Mike Davis saved the U.S. Open with a lawn mower.

Common sense also has injected an air of calm into the proceedings. Before the abbreviated first round got underway, Davis clipped the hay fields and played from the front of nearly every tee box. By his estimates, Open doctor Rees Jones figured the course played, “About 7,000 (yards), maybe,” he smiled.

For all the added real estate Jones sliced into the Black, the place feels as confined as Lower Manhattan under the new rules.
