OAKMONT, Pa. – Four three putts on the front nine.
Three double bogeys.
Michelle Wie is on her way to a quick exit from the U.S. Women’s Open if she doesn’t rally, and Oakmont’s no place to rally.
Wie posted 43 on her front nine, making the turn at 8-over par. She missed a 3-footer at her first hole on the way to her first three putt, this one from just 18 feet.
Wie made her first double at the 14th hole. After driving right into a fairway bunker, she had to pitch out sideways. After knocking her approach to 25 feet, she recorded her second three putt. She also three putted the 16th on the way to another double bogey. She tried to drive the short 17th, pushing her tee shot into the right greenside bunker. She left her first bunker shot in the bunker. After blasting 20 feet past the pin and through the green, she three putted from the fringe for her third double bogey, though the stats may not officially record that one as a three putt.
