Wie ready to join fight for No 1

Michelle Wie will always be linked in a special way to Lorena Ochoa.

Wie, 20, didn’t just break through to win her first LPGA event in Ochoa’s Mexican homeland last fall. She won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

With Ochoa saying farewell as a full-time player at the Tres Marias Championship this week, the No. 1 spot Ochoa holds is up for grabs. Wie was asked in her news conference today if she was ready to take over.

“Hopefully, that will work out,” Wie said. “I know there are a lot of people vying for that spot now, so I’m just going to have to try that much harder.”

Wie is ranked No. 9 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, the second highest American on the list. Only Cristie Kerr (No. 6) ranks ahead of her.

“It’s fierce out here,” Wie said. “I think every single player out here wants to take it to another level, and with that competitiveness, it automatically just brings the game up.”
