Wie snaps streak of over-par rounds

Michelle Wie took a positive step Thursday in turning around her season.

Wie posted a 1-under-par 70 in the first round of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic at Grey Silo Golf Course in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Wie will be aiming to end a run of six consecutive missed cuts – five in LPGA events – when she tees it up Friday.

With a round of five birdies and four bogeys, Wie ended a string of 16 consecutive rounds over par in LPGA events.

It’s a meaningful round for Wie. While she relished receiving her diploma from Stanford in a graduation ceremony last week, Wie hasn’t hidden her frustration with her struggles this year, or her determination to turn around her game.

Wie’s emotional roller coaster the last two weeks is revealed in her recent tweets:

About graduating from Stanford – “It’s official!!!! I’m a Stanford graduate!!!! . . . Woohoo! We did it!!!”

About missing the cut at the Wegmans LPGA Championship – “Not playing on the weekends of the past two majors has been so difficult. There is nothing more that I want than to be back in contention!

“I never want to sit out on a weekend ever again! Gonna use this feeling to push myself to be better.”
