Michelle Wie’s defense of her first LPGA title ended in pain and disappointment Thursday at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Wie withdrew after struggling through the first round with back pain. She said she’s been plagued with a bulging disc and pain from two cysts near her spine. The cysts, which Wie said weren't serious problems, were revealed in an MRI about two months ago.
Limping and grimacing in discomfort through her round, Wie played on, shooting a 6-over-par 78. She won Ochoa's event last year for her first LPGA title.
“I was very excited to be here, but, unfortunately, I can’t play anymore,” Wie said. “I’m going to see the doctor tomorrow and hope to make it feel better.”
