Ernie Els continues to draw closer to his first post-British Open victory.
This time the Big Easy was in contention at the Asian Tour’s CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters, where a final-round 68 Sunday left him one shot shy of Bernd Wiesberger of Austria. Els posted a 14-under 274 (68-70-68-68).
Els, 43, hasn’t won on any tour since his comeback victory at Royal Lytham, but seems to have regained some of that championship form. Entering this week at No. 24 in the Official World Ranking, he now has finished in the top 15 in four of his past five worldwide events, including a T-13 at the Masters.
“A win would have been unbelievable, but second is not all that bad,” Els said afterward, according to the Asian Tour website. “This has given me something and it shows my game is going in the right direction. I’m starting to feel really good about my game.”
