DUBLIN, Ohio – If he isn’t careful, Mark Wilson is going to start getting a reputation as an elite player out here on the PGA Tour.
Already with two wins to his credit this year – at the Sony Open and the Waste Management Phoenix Open – Wilson is in contention once again at the Memorial Tournament, where a third-round 6-under 66 propelled him up the leaderboard on Saturday.
“I like going under the radar,” he said after the round. “It’s just fine.”
Wilson posted five birdies and followed with an eagle from 10 feet on the par-5 15th hole before making his lone bogey of the day on the closing hole.
It’s been an unlikely breakthrough season for the 36-year-old from Wisconsin. After posting two victories in his first 216 appearances on the PGA Tour, he’s now in contention for his third in 15 starts this year.
With such lofty goals as Player of the Year, the money list title and a Presidents Cup berth well within range, Wilson maintains that he isn’t getting ahead of himself in his pursuit for another title.
“No, I think about the feeling you have when you've accomplished a win and all that goes into it and that satisfaction you get and how I want that again,” he explained. “That's really all I think about, not all those extra things. They take care of themselves.”
