Wilson wish list: Bookend victories for his PGA Tour season

Similar to the Ryder Cup qualification process, the Presidents Cup points system is weighted toward the current year, with players earning two points for every dollar they mark compared to a one-to-one split last year.

But in the case of Mark Wilson, you can’t help but wonder if the process isn’t weighted enough. Consider that Wilson, No.  19 on the Presidents Cup points list, already has two victories this year on Tour and yet could still not automatically qualify for U.S. captain Fred Couples’ team even with a victory on Sunday at the BMW Championship.

Wilson, who is tied for the lead at Cog Hill with Justin Rose, would earn 2.88 million points with a victory for a 9.88 million point total. No. 10 David Toms currently has 8.95 million points but is tied for seventh and could still edge Wilson with a top-3 finish.

But on Friday at Cog Hill, Wilson didn’t seem overly concerned with the FedEx Cup math, or the fact his two titles this year (Sony Open and Waste Management Open) both came before March.

“I want to have bookends to the year, two to start and two to finish (BMW and Tour Championship),” he said.
