Wilson outlasts birdie assault at Humana

RSS

Once again, Mark Wilson has prevailed in a PGA Tour event plagued by weather.

Wilson shot 3-under 69 on Sunday to win the Humana Challenge in the California darkness, defeating a trio of players by two shots at 24-under-par. Robert Garrigus, last week's winner Johnson Wagner and John Mallinger finished tied for second at 22 under.

After closing his third-round 61 in the morning, Garrigus hung close to the lead all afternoon. A five-foot miss for par at the par-3 17th, however, cost Garrigus a chance to challenge his final round playing partner for the title.

Wagner shot 65, while Mallinger carded 66 to finish as joint runner-ups with Garrigus.

Sony Open 54-hole co-leader Jeff Maggert made a Sunday charge at the former Hope, shooting an 8-under 64 in the final round to finish alone in fifth place.

The win marks Wilson's fifth career PGA Tour title and third in the space of 13 months. He won twice last year in weather-impacted events, taking the Sony Open in a 36-hole marathon finish and defeating Jason Dufner in a Monday playoff for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
