Winning father-son combos rare in golf

Jay Haas made the trip to the Bob Hope Classic today to watch his son, Bill, play in the final round.

Following your father’s footsteps on the PGA Tour is no easy task.

Just seven fathers and sons had won PGA Tour events before Bill made it eight with his victory. It had last been accomplished when Brent Geiberger won the 1999 Greater Hartford Open. His father, Al, won 11 PGA Tour titles in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Brent also went on to win the ’04 Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.

Jay’s nine PGA Tour victories include the 1988 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Here are the seven previous father-son combinations listed in the PGA Tour media guide as winners of Tour events:

Tom Morris Sr., Tom Morris Jr.
Willie Park, Willie Park Jr.
Joe Kirkwood Sr., Joe Kirkwood Jr.
Jack Burke Sr., Jack Burke Jr.
Clayton Heafner, Vance Heafner
Julius Boros, Guy Boros
Al Geiberger, Brent Geiberger
