Injury and a new swing have combined to make 2012 the most difficult year of Gary Woodland’s young career but if his scrappy week at Kiawah is any indication he may be rounding into form just in time for the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Woodland opened the week with a 67 and even when he was blown off course with a Friday 79 in the worst of the Round 2 winds he was pleased with the progress he’s made since signing on with Butch Harmon earlier this season.
“I’m healthy, that’s the biggest thing,” said Woodland, who at 130th on the FedEx Cup points list needs a big week at the Wyndham Championship to qualify for the playoffs. “It’s allowed me to really work on the things Butch wants me to do.”
Harmon calls Woodland “a sponge” when it comes to the golf swing and the coach said his energy and enthusiasm is infectious.
“He’s really fired me up to coach. He’s a gym rat and that energy has helped me with my other guys,” Harmon said at Kiawah.
