Woods confident at Lytham after opening 67

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England – Tiger Woods loves Royal Lytham & St. Annes. It was the course that convinced him he was good enough to turn professional back in 1996 when he was low amateur at the British Open.

Now, after an opening-round 67, it’s the course that has him feeling confident while eyeing major championship No. 15.

Woods birdied the par-3 first hole, followed with birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and 7 to shoot 30 on the first nine holes. He made his lone bogey on the 15th hole – the more difficult side of Lytham – and sailed in with 67 to stand three shots behind leader Adam Scott.

“I played well today,” Woods said. “I got off to a sweet start there. I kept hitting it well. My pace was slightly off on the greens. I just needed to hit it another 6 inches or a foot harder.”

Even though Woods was pleased with his performance, his statistics suggest that his round could’ve been much lower. He hit 15/18 greens, 13/14 fairways and had 30 putts.
