MEDINAH, Ill. – Tiger Woods sat out a session Saturday for the first time in his Ryder Cup career – and he had no issue with the benching.
“That was the plan going into these matches,” Woods said Saturday night. “I put so much effort into that last match yesterday afternoon (a 1-up fourballs loss to Nicolas Colsaerts and Lee Westwood), and I was pretty spent. It was nice to get a little bit of rest.
“This is way different than the Presidents Cup when you have four days. Five matches in three days is a lot, and hey, I’m not young anymore. I’m one of the older guys. It’s nice to get a little bit of rest.”
Woods, 36, said he wanted to go out on the course Saturday morning and cheer on his teammates, but was told by captain Davis Love III to “stay inside, stay warm and be ready for your match.”
In afternoon fourballs, Woods and partner Steve Stricker lost to Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia, 1 up, dropping to 0-3 this week.
“It was nice to be fresh, no doubt,” he said. “This is a long grind to go all five (matches). I’ve done it before, and it’s hard.”
