Woods hints at switching up pre-Masters schedule

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Tiger Woods hinted Wednesday that he’s considering switching up his normal schedule going into the Masters.

It's unclear if he meant adding an event or dropping an event or just going to Augusta National a lot earlier than he typically does.

If Woods sticks with his traditional preparation, after this week’s Honda Classic, he will make two more starts before going to Augusta National. He will play the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump Doral next week and then the Arnold Palmer Invitational two weeks after.

Asked directly Wednesday about his pre-Masters schedule, Woods was cryptic, as he typically is talking about his schedule.

“Still looking into that, yeah,” Woods said. “Still looking to possibly make some changes going in there.”

Woods skipped last week’s Accenture Match Play Championship and has made just two starts so far this year. If he plays Trump Doral and Bay Hill after Honda, he’ll have five starts going to the Masters. He played six times before going to Augusta National last year, but he played just five times pre-Masters four other times in his career. He played seven times before it in ’05 and eight times before it in ’02.

Basically, if Woods believes he needs an extra start before the Masters, his options are adding the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook March 13-16, the Valero Texas Open March 27-30 or the Shell Houston Open April 3-6. Adding any of those would be surprising.

The Shell Houston Open has aimed to meet the needs of players prepping for the Masters with the Golf Club of Houston being groomed to firm and fast conditions, but it will be played the week before the Masters. Woods has never played the week before the Masters.

“We haven’t had any indication he’s considering us,” Steve Timms, the Shell Houston Open tournament director, told GolfChannel.com. “We would love to have him, it would be great, we’ll just have to wait and see.”
