Woods' opening 69 at Chevron is a shoe-in

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Tiger Woods opened with an eventful 3-under 69 at the Chevron World Challenge that featured six birdies, three bogeys and an emergency shoe change midway through a blustery day Thursday.

After making the turn in 3 under, Woods snapped a shoelace on the 10th hole and sent an aide to the locker room for a replacement pair which he scrambled into before teeing off on the 11th hole.

Woods said on Wednesday the prototype pair of spike-less Nike Golf shoes he’s been wearing since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational allow him to be “closer to the ground.” Without a quick replacement on Thursday, he may have ended up closer to the turf than he would have liked.
