AKRON, Ohio – Although he still has 18 holes on Sunday at Firestone and next week’s PGA Championship to improve his status on the FedEx Cup points list, Tiger Woods’ third-round 75 did little to help his postseason chances.
Woods is currently 111th on the points list with three events – WGC-Bridgestone, PGA and Wyndham Championship – before the first Playoff event in New Jersey and will need to remain inside the top 125 if he is to qualify for the first post-season tournament.
If Woods were to fall out of the top 125 after next week’s PGA Championship he could play the Wyndham, but he has never participated in the event and it doesn’t look like he’s going to this year regardless of his precarious position.
“We’ve been in touch with (Woods’ manager with IMG Mark Steinberg) and as it stands right now it doesn’t look like (the Wyndham) will fit on his schedule,” said Mark Brazil, the tournament director for the Wyndham Championship.
Which means there’s a chance the reigning FedEx Cup champion may not qualify for this year’s postseason. Not quite first to worst, but it’s close.
