Woods says streaky puttings hurt him at Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Why hasn’t Tiger Woods won a green jacket since 2005?

While Woods says course changes are a factor, especially changes that made Augusta National's par 5s more difficult, he believes an uncooperative putter has cost him titles.

“I felt I had a pretty good shot on a couple of different occasions to win on the back nine and just putted poorly,” Woods said. “I have been streaky here for some reason, and you can’t be streaky here. You have to get it going and you have to keep it going. The years that I’ve won here, I’ve putted well the entire week.”

Woods is putting his new Nike Method 003 mid-mallet putter into play again this week.Mostly his backup putter at season's start, the mid-mallet has become Woods’ mainstay this season. He started the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral with his old reliable Scotty Cameron 2 putter but switched to the Nike Method mid-mallet on the weekend. He put the Nike mid-mallet back in play again in his last start at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Woods won his first major championship at the 1997 Masters with a Ping Anser 2 putter. He won the next 13 majors with a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 modeled after the Ping Anser 2. He created a stir when he first went away from the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 at the British Open last summer to play a Nike Method 001, a blade similar in shape to the Scotty Cameron and Ping Anser putters.

Since Woods’ last Masters’ title, here are his finishes at Augusta National: T-3, T-2, 2, T-6 and T-4.
