One man stands between Tiger Woods and the lead after Day 1 at the 112th U.S. Open.
Woods shot 1-under 69 on Thursday at The Olympic Club to trail Michael Thompson by three shots.
Thompson, who needed just 22 putts en route to 66, was runner-up to Colt Knost at this venue in the 2007 U.S. Amateur.
Woods is joined in a tie for second with 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, David Toms, Justin Rose and Nick Watney. Watney made the third albatross in U.S. Open history on Thursday, holing a 5-iron from 190 yards at the par-5 17th to move from 3 over at the time to even.
Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, grouped with Woods, did not fare as well as the world No. 4. Mickelson shot 76, while the Masters champion was two higher.
The grouping featuring the top three players in the Official World Golf Ranking was a combined 19 over par on Thursday. Reigning U.S. Open champion and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy shot 77. World No. 1 Luke Donald shot 79, while Lee Westwood posted 73.
