Zach Johnson could match Hogan feat at Colonial

The last man to win back-to-back titles at Colonial Country Club has a statue of his likeness just outside the clubhouse.

Ben Hogan won’t be giving way to Zach Johnson anytime soon, but the latter can match a mark that has stood for 60 years. That’s because the defending champion fired a third-round 68 to follow scores of 69-65, putting him in contention for a second consecutive Crowne Plaza Invitational title.

Johnson had gone 37 holes – more than two full rounds – without a bogey until he rolled a par putt past the cup on the par-3 16th on Saturday afternoon. Even so, he’s still very much in contention entering Sunday’s final round on a course where he won not only last year, but in 2010 as well.

Hogan remains the lone player to win back-to-back titles at Colonial, doing so in the inaugural seasons of 1946-47, then repeating the feat in 1952-53.
