SAN FRANCISCO – When Andy Zhang teed off Thursday for the first round of the U.S. Open, he made history as the youngest competitor in this championship. And before he knew it, he was 8 over par after five holes.
But the youngster dug deep and played the remaining 13 holes in 1 over par, including a birdie at the last hole, to shoot 9-over 79. He signed an eventful scorecard that had four bogeys, two double bogeys, one triple bogey and two birdies.
“On the first tee, I was like ‘just please don’t hit 100-yard slice off the first tee’ and I was shaking really hard. But I hit a great shot.
“At least I broke 80.”
