The Heat Is On for BuyCom

RSS

The Buy.Com Tour heads into the desert heat of Arizona for the second edition of the Gila River Golf Classic at Wild Horse Pass Resort.

And just as the desert temperatures begin to rise, so does the pressure on the players as they try to make their way into the top 15 on the season-ending money list.

Four players are currently within $6,000 of Charles Warren, who's now in the 15th spot due to his strong fourth-place showing last week. His efforts were worth $21,600 and moved him up from the 18th position.

The wire-to-wire winner of the Monterey Peninsula Classic, Roland Thatcher, benefitted from the $81,000 first-place check and vaulted him to 33th on the money list.

The top 55 on the money list after the next two events get a spot in the lucrative season-ending Tour Championship.

Tournament officials and fans wouldn't mind a repeat of last year's inaugural event that saw a wild finish of three players going into what turned out to be a four-hole sudden death playoff.

Speaking of repeats, 2001 champion Ben Crane is currently playing on the PGA Tour, thus there will be no repeat champion and will keep alive the Buy.Com Tour's streak of 13 years without a repeat champion.

Four players - Cliff Kresge, Patrick Moore, Arron Oberholser and Jason Gore - all will be looking to get their third win of the season and with it, the PGA Tour's Battlefield Promotion.

Three players received the instant promotion last year, but so far no one has in 2002. The four abovementioned players would surely love to rise out of the Arizona heat and onto the PGA Tour.
