Donald finishes strong, happy with game

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England – Luke Donald was a non-factor most of the week. The world No. 1 had the pressure of a nation on his shoulders trying to win the British Open in his native England.

But he fought and clawed his way around Royal Lytham & St. Annes and a final-round 69 vaulted him to a top-five finish. Donald shot 70-68-71-69 for a 2-under-par 278 total.

“Certainly I’ll leave this week knowing that my game is definitely good enough to win majors,” Donald said. “It’s a big step forward for me from a few weeks back, from the U.S. Open.”

Donald will keep his No. 1 ranking with the performance. Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods each had a chance to be No. 1, but none did enough to pass Donald.
