PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The 17th hole is intimidating under any circumstances. It's more nerve-wracking under tournament pressure.
The Hogan Flight (handicaps that range from 8-11.9) tried to tame the infamous beast Sunday during the first round of the Golf Channel Amateur Tour National Championship. Yours truly stood near the green for about an hour and watch four groups file through, and 10 of the 12 players found lands on the hole that was playing 115-yards and was directly downwind for most of the day.
With several groups still on the course, there were 10 7s, three 8s, three 9s, one 11 and one 12 recorded on the hole.
Trevor Peck, Ben Burney and Mark Bond each made birdie.
