ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Sixteen hours after Tiger Woods said his new Nike Method putter had nothing to do with his poor putting this week, he put his old Titleist Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter back into his bag for the final round of the Open Championship.
Asked Saturday evening following a third-round 73 if the new putter was to blame for hit putting performance he said, “No, I just need to have better speed.”
Woods change earlier in the week made big headlines because he had carried the Scotty Cameron putter since the 1999 Byron Nelson Classic and won 72 times around the world, including 13 major championships. He said he made the swap to help him roll the ball better on the Old Course’s slower greens.
Through three rounds Woods has 99 total putts, which ranked him toward the bottom half of the field.
