Top 10 tough acts to follow

tiger phil masters

1. Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson in contention on the back nine Sunday at Augusta. It happened last year when the two main attractions had the patrons in a frenzy.  Woods birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 16 but bogeyed the last two. Mickelson shot 30 on the front side.

azinger ryder cup

2. An American Ryder Cup captain as dynamic as Paul Azinger. It’ll be a tough ask of Corey Pavin this year as his personality is considerably different from Azinger, who tweaked the points standings then rode his pod system to victory on home soil.

Wie Lorena Ochoa Invitational

3. A Michelle Wie victory. The Big Wiesy should be able to handle this one, although the tall Hawaiian kept us waiting last year until an 11th-hour win at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico. It’d be greedy to ask for multiple victories, but the LPGA probably wouldn’t mind.

tom watson british open

4. A senior in the hunt at the Open Championship. It’s happened the past two years with Greg Norman and Tom Watson respectively. No way it happens again, right?david duval us open

5. David Duval contends for another major. Double D charmed the New York galleries at Bethpage last summer at the U.S. Open and nearly pulled off what would’ve been the feelgood story of the decade. After a triple bogey on the third hole of the final round, Duval birdied 14, 15 and 16, but bogeyed 17 and tied for second place.yang tiger pga

6. Someone stares Tiger Woods in the face and beats him at a major championship. I root neither for nor against Woods, but watching Y.E. Yang take down golf’s Goliath was good for the game. It was the first time it had ever happened to Woods at a major. Will it be the last?

Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin

7. The LPGA Player of the Year race comes down to the last round of the year. Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin waited until the final hole of the year to determine the winner. Ochoa saved bogey on the 17th then made a 20-footer for birdie at the last to win by a whisker.

tiger woods bay hill

8. A walk-off of any kind at Bay Hill. It’s been Tiger Woods the past two years but it doesn’t have to be him this year. I just want to see someone make a putt they have to make on the final hole to win by a shot.

Brittany Lincicome

9. An eagle on the 72nd hole from someone to win an LPGA major. Brittany Lincicome made eagle on the final hole of the Kraft Nabisco Championship in one of the most exciting women’s majors in the past decade. Lincicome hit a drive 275-yards, followed with a hybrid from 210-yards to 4 feet and made the putt to beat friends Kristy McPherson and Cristie Kerr.

tiger woods pebble beach

10. A 15-shot triumph at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. It happened 10 years ago when “you-know-who” finished more than two touchdowns ahead of Ernie Els and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Can’t see this happening in a million years, but Pebble Beach is a majestic place.
