On June 20, at Nonesuch River Golf Course, The Golf Channel hosted its 49th Junior Golf Skills Competition of the 2001 season. Judging by the skill level of the participants, it was hard to believe that this was the first event ever hosted in the Portland area. These junior golfers treated us to some stellar golf play, including four chip-ins and a 250-yard drive. The junior golfers from the Portland area showed tremendous dedication to the game by waiting out a late afternoon thunderstorm that postponed the event for about a half hour. Despite this delay, the junior golfers came out of the clubhouse energized and finished the event strong. The state of Maine is well known for its tasty lobsters, but after seeing the Portland area Junior Golf Skills Competition, Maine may be famous for Golf as well.
