SPOTLIGHT - Tampa West Palm and Gainseville

The third Junior Golf Skills Competition of the 2001 Florida swing was in Tampa, Florida on March 20. This event had a tough act to follow after an outstanding kick-off event in Orlando. Alan Heirs and his staff at Bloomingdale Golfers Club did not disappoint. Thunderstorms threatened all day, but just before the start of the competition the skies cleared and the sun came out to make conditions perfect. The Tampa event was filled with outstanding play and great enthusiasm from all the players. Along with the Orlando event, Tampa has set the standard high for the remaining 2001 season.
From Tampa, the East Coast JGS Bus moved to West Palm Beach for the March 22nd event stop. For the third consecutive year The Golf Channel held its Drive, Chip and Putt Jr. Golf Skills Competition at the PGA National Resort and Spa. This was a beautiful facility to host our event, and as always Frank Petiti and his staff did a first class job. We had participants from all over South Florida and even some from Central Florida. The West Palm Beach event and the PGA National Resort will always be favorites among the JGS crew and jr. golfers.
The third qualifying event and first regional event for the East Coast JGS team brought us to Gainesville, Florida. The qualifier was an outstanding one on a beautiful Gainesville morning. It was great to see that the Regional event brought many familiar faces from years past such as Michael Chipolone, Alexandria Buelow and Alexandra Bodemann along with many new participants as well. This event was held at Ironwood Golf Course where we awarded our first three National Finalists of the year 2001. Kyle Cobb was our 11-12 National Finalist, from the 9-10 division came Jessica Schall and from the 7-8 age group the first place finisher was Branden Collins
