Yet this week gives us the Australian PGA Championship, the Hong Kong Open, the Father-Son Challenge and the Nedbank Challenge. That doesnt include LPGA and PGA Tour Qualifying events.
Among those players teeing it up this week; Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington, Chris DiMarco, Bob Estes, Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Greg Norman, Hale Irwin, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer and Lee Janzen.
Hey, Im all for golf. I love the game and I love the busy weeks, otherwise I wouldnt exactly have much to do with my day at The Golf Channel. But when is enoughEnough?!
The respective tour schedules are plenty long enough. And at this point of the year I believe everyoneincluding fans and media ... deserve some rest.
Why is the NFL so popular? Why do we crave the beginning of the football season so much? In my opinion its because were forced into football withdrawal. After early January, college football is stripped from our television sets. The NFL says bye-bye after the Super Bowl at the end of January or the first days of February. And for the next seven to eight months we are left to wish for the BCS controversy and cry for Monday Night Football. Come August, fall training camps are the best news one could deliver.
Winter prevents baseball from playing all year long. But after the Fall Classic, were left to talk about which team signed which player and whos the No. 4 pitcher? We get excited when pitchers and catchers report.
As for golfIt just keeps going and going and going and going. While that might be good for The Golf Channel - which needs tournaments to talk about - I dont believe its good for the sport overall.
Make us cry for the Mercedes Championships. Make us long for the Kraft Nabisco. Heck, make us crave the Nationwide Tours First Tee Arkansas Classic. In golf we are blessed by so many great stars. But too often we see them every week. Give the greats a schedule that has some open dates. Give the stars a calendar with two months off at the end of the year to make us gear up for January.
Maybe Im wrong, but while I can appreciate a players chance to make some holiday spending money, I dont think theyd lose sleep without it.
Again, I could be wrong...but that old saying absence makes the heart grow fonder might just apply to our great game this time of year.
Am I wrong?
Anyway, Im off to the Target World Challenge next week where Tigers teeing it up along with 15 other stars in our game. The Sprint Pre-Game/Post-Game will be there all week. See you there!
