The ShopRite LPGA Classic Monday qualifier is open to all female golfers, either professional or amateur with a USGA handicap index of 3.4 or less. This differs from a traditional LPGA tournament Monday qualifier, which is open only to LPGA Tour non-exempt members, Class A or B LPGA Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP) members and no more than two female amateur golfers with a USGA handicap index of 3.4 or less who are invited by the sponsor.
The field for the ShopRite LPGA Classic Monday qualifier will have a maximum of 132 players; 100 competitors may be non-LPGA Tour members, either amateur or professional; and 32 spots will be reserved for LPGA Tournament Division members.
As part of the LPGAs strategic plan, we are exploring different avenues in which to showcase the very best of womens golf on a weekly basis, said LPGA Vice President of Tournament Operations Barb Trammell.
By experimenting with our first-ever open Monday qualifier, we hope to give an opportunity to members of the Futures Tour, all LPGA T&CP members, other non-LPGA professionals across the country and top national amateurs, as well as LPGA Tour members, a chance to compete for two spots in the tournament. This is the only open Monday qualifier scheduled for the 2003 season, but we will look to the results of this opportunity to determine the viability of hosting more in the future.
