Gainey vs Gomes in Big Break VII Finals

RSS

The Big Break VIITommy Gainey put on an exhibition to advance to the finals of The Big Break VII: Reunion while Mike Foster will only be able to watch the show.

The penultimate episode of the series pitted Gainey, Foster and Ashley Gomes in a nine-hole stroke-play match on the front-nine of the Palmer Legacy course with the player posting the highest score eliminated from the competition. Tied after the nine holes, Gomes eliminated Foster with a par on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

I felt my competition was going to be Tommy, said Gomes. I had confidence I had enough game to beat Mike and I would have to deal with Tommy.

Gainey and Gomes will advance to the championship match next Tuesday at Ginn Reunion Resort at Reunion, Fla. If victorious, he would earn a spot in the field of the 2007 Cox Classic on the Nationwide Tour. Should Gomes claim the title, then she will be invited to compete in the 2007 Ginn Tribute Hosted by ANNIKA on the LPGA Tour.

Considered the most talented player in the original field of 16 players, Gainey, known as Two Gloves because he plays with a golf glove on each hand, fired an easy 2-under-par 34 highlighted by three birdies and a bogey. He took the lead with a birdie on the fourth hole and never trailed in the match

While Gainey cruised, Fosters suspect putting led to his eliminated. He failed to convert a 10-foot birdie on the first hole and then missed a 3-foot par effort on the next hole to fall behind in the match. On No. 4, he failed to make birdie from 5 feet. After flailing most of the afternoon, Foster was able to somewhat redeem himself by making a 7-footer for birdie on the ninth hole to tie Gomes at 1 over par and force the playoff.

For her part, Gomes exhibited neither Gaineys domination nor Fosters lack of touch on the greens while recording eight pars and one bogey. It was her ability to save par from tight spots that kept her in the match. In the playoff against Foster, she hit the green on the par-4 eighth hole and two-putted from 40 feet for par while Foster missed the green and failed to get up-and-down to extend the match.

I was nervous when I found out we were only playing nine holes, Gomes said of the match. There isnt room for error. You try to tell yourself that its just another day at the golf course but you know better.

The Big Break concept pits highly skilled golfers against each other in challenges that test physical skills and mental toughness. During The Big Break VII, competitors will be eliminated with the last one standing crowned the winner. Each show features two to three challenges, the outcome of each influencing who stays and who goes home. Each challenge will demand precision shot-making designed to simulate conditions that players face every week on Tour.
