Christensen Once Again Near the Top

RSS

CanAm Days ChampionshipAfter two misses early in this Canadian Tour season, Dave Christensen is hoping to take that one final step up the ladder this weekend at the CanAm Days Championship.

The 24-year-old native of Otsego, MN, with second-place finishes at both the Myrtle Beach Open and Barefoot Classic, sits atop the leaderboard after the opening round on Barefoot Resorts Pete Dye courses. Christensen carded a 6-under-par 66 Friday and, after squeezing in eight holes during the second round before darkness halted play, managed to get to 8-under, good enough for a two-shot lead over three others, including Danny Mijovic of Toronto.

With the tournament now officially a 54-hole event, the 72 golfers who began second round play Friday will resume where they left off Saturday morning at 8 a.m. The second round afternoon pairings will begin play at 10:30 a.m. Following the completion of the second round, the low 60 scores, plus ties, will survive the cut and advance to Sundays final round.

After his impressive performance Friday, Christensen was quick to credit playing partners Jerry Foltz (Chandler, AZ) and Doug LaBelle (Mt. Pleasant, MI) with setting the tone early. The trio combined for a dozen birdies on the front nine, despite Foltz dropping a 7 on his opening hole of the day.

I was just trying to keep up to them (Foltz and LaBelle), admitted Christensen, who also wound up third at Februarys Winter Q-School. They both were making some great shots all day, and it was a pleasure being grouped with them.

Now back in a familiar position near the top of the leader board, Christensen is somewhat relieved to find himself in the role of the hunter as opposed to the hunted.

Im looking forward to the weekend, it should be a lot of fun. Its a different feeling being at the top. But a lot of guys are going to be coming after me, so I have to remain focused.
